News & Press Releases BORDER UNION SHOW PRESS RELEASE 2009
196th BORDER UNION SHOW Major Sponsor : Bank of Scotland, Classes are held for Horses and Ponies on the Friday with Saturday featuring Horses, Cattle, Sheep, Dairy Goats, Alpacas, Poultry, Horse Shoeing, Shepherds’ Crooks and Industrial Crafts. The Border Union Show hosts several high profile qualifiers and these attract entries from all over Britain. More details of our classes and qualifiers can be obtained from www.buas.org ( Some sections are not held on both days). A new feature will be Total Entries are up on 2008 with over 2000 including 820 Equine, 698 sheep, 128 cattle not to mention good entries for Goats, Alpacas, Poultry and the ladies Industrial Classes. Visitors will have the opportunity to see close up, some of the finest animals and exhibits in the UK. On Saturday afternoon the Main Ring is dedicated to family entertainment. Acts this year, including around the Showground · Lings Honda Stunt Display Team · CIS Scottish Cup Keepie Uppie Competition The well known COUNTRYSIDE AREA, which is open on both days, provides education about various aspects of the countryside and environment through interesting and interactive displays. There will be free Fly Fishing demonstrations and tuition at the pond, lifting potatoes from “ the Plot “ using Vintage machinery - not to mention Greenwood Pole Lathe and Drystone Walling demonstrations plus information on sustainable energy options for your home. In the Tweed Foundation Stand see beneath the water line, guess the weight of a salmon and learn how to tie flies. By popular demand Richard Savoury’s Sheep Show is back this year. Also there is a promotion for the CIS Scottish Cup with children being able to take part in a “Keepie Uppie” Competition to win free tickets to some Scottish Cup matches. There are plenty of other things for kids to do elsewhere in the Showground on both days including a Climbing Wall, Face Painting, Clowns and of course the FUNFAIR and amusement stands. The light-hearted CHILDREN’S PET SHOW is held on Friday at 3.00p.m. Entries are taken on the field from those up to fifteen years of age and entry is free. This is always an entertaining event for young and old! Classes are held for Rabbits and Cavies, Dogs (of different sizes) and any other animals – the latter always providing an interesting collection of creatures such as worms, turtles, alpacas and stick insects. The Taste Scottish Borders Food Fair, which is held in the main Exhibition Hall on both days, includes 36 stands selling food and drink and also incorporates entertaining and informative demonstrations by local Chefs using local produce. Not to be out-done, on Friday Radio Borders DJs, Stuart McCulloch and Paul Brownlee, will go head to head in a Ready Steady Cook using their skills to cook “bangers and mash” – making the sausages and using the potatoes from the Plot. This will be repeated on Saturday between Rugby stars, Doddie Weir and John Jeffrey. The Food Fair is an excellent opportunity to stock up on fantastic local Scottish Borders produce – from delicious beef, pork and lamb to cheese, berries, yoghurt and honey to potatoes, cider and wine. There will also be a free ‘food crèche’ where customers can leave their perishable goods refrigerated until they are ready to go home.
