194th BORDER UNION SHOW Sponsored by Bank of Scotland, The annual Border Union Show, South East Scotland’s premier event is all set to take place at the end of the month. It really is a great day out for everybody with lots of animals, delicious food, children’s amusements, great shopping, countryside activities and an exciting Main Ring programme on Saturday afternoon featuring ex World Championship moto-cross rider Jason Smyth and his amazing Motorcycle Stunt Show.
On Saturday afternoon the Main Ring is dedicated to family entertainment. Acts this year include: · Jason Smyth’s Adrenaline Tour – Motorcycle Stunts The famous COUNTRYSIDE AREA, which is open on both days, provides education about various aspects of the countryside and environment through interesting and interactive displays. There will be free Fly Fishing demonstrations and tuition at the pond, Bindering and Threshing Demonstrations in our crop of barley using vintage machinery - not to mention Puppets, Ferret Racing, Greenwood Pole Lathe and Drystone Walling demonstrations, Falconry and information on sustainable energy options for your home – including the construction of a straw ‘hoose’! There are plenty of other things for kids to do elsewhere in the Showground on both days including Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting, Paintball, a Climbing Wall, Face Painting, Clowns and of course the FUNFAIR and amusement stands. The light-hearted CHILDREN’S PET SHOW is held on Friday at 3.00p.m. Entries are taken on the field from those up to fifteen years of age and entry is free. This is always an entertaining event for young and old! Classes are held for Rabbits and Cavies, Dogs (of different sizes) and any other animals – the latter always providing an interesting collection of creatures such as worms, turtles, alpacas and stick insects. The Scottish Borders ‘Flavours of the Borders’ Food Fair which is held in the main Exhibition Hall on both days, includes 30 stands selling food and drink and also incorporates entertaining and informative demonstrations by local Chef’s using local produce. It is an excellent opportunity to try and stock up on fantastic local Scottish Borders produce – from delicious beef, pork, lamb and seafood to cheese, berries, yoghurt and honey to potatoes, cider and wine. This year, there will also be a free ‘food crèche’ where customers can leave their perishable goods refrigerated until they are ready to leave.
