BORDER UNION AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY
Friday 25th July 2003
The two year Development Project undertaken by the Border Union Agricultural Society has made Springwood Park in Kelso one of the most up to date Showgrounds in the country. A new entrance, new tarmaced roads, a new multi-functional Exhibition Hall, new toilet and shower block and landscaping. The Exhibition Hall measures 42m x 24m giving 1000 sq.metres of exhibition space plus a fitted kitchen, a meeting room and toilets with full disabled facilities, which makes it suitable for any type of Exhibition, Craft Fair, Conference, Launch, Trade Fair, Fashion Show, Wedding, Dinners and Dances. This £800,000 Project has been jointly funded by the Border Union, Scottish Enterprise Borders, Scottish Borders Council and part financed by the European Union through the South of Scotland European Objective 2 Programme.
All works will be finished by the end of April with a full list of bookings in the Showground, including the three core events - Championship Dog Show in June, Border Union Show in July and Dectomax Kelso Ram Sales in September.
The results of this Project will have a huge impact for the Borders economy not only with the jobs that have been maintained but the new opportunities created by the increased number of people in the Borders being part of the events in the Showground.
The New Exhibition Hall will be officially opened on Friday 25th July, the first day of the Border Union Show, by HRH the Princess Royal. Although the Society has been in existence since January 1813 this is the first time in its history that Royalty has been at the Show. It is of particularly significance this year as it is the Golden Jubilee of the Society purchasing Springwood Park as its permanent home in June 1953.
"It is a great honour for the Society that the Princess Royal has accepted our invitation to open the new Exhibition Hall" said Ronald Wilson.
