Championship Dog Show Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th June 2016

The Border Union Championship Dog Show may be young, but it has a character all of its own.

For a number of years a Dog Show was a feature of the Border Union Agricultural Show, held in July. Members of the Canine Section Committee lead by the late Mrs Margaret Lyndesay Smith as Chairman, with the late Jean Cook as Secretary, saw the opportunity to bring a Show of Championship status to the Borders and after Kennel Club approval, the first Championship Show was held on 8th August 1975.The Border Union Championship Dog Show is a qualifier for Crufts (details of how to qualify can be found on the Kennel Club website and in the Kennel Journal).

The original committee consisted of Mrs Margaret Lyndesay Smith as Chairman, Jean Cook as Secretary, Lynn Clayton as Assistant Secretary, Ronnie Irving as Chief Steward, Jimmy Briggs as Assistant Chief Steward, Jimmy Macgregor as Show Manager, Joe Macaulay as Assistant Show Manager, Tony Clayton, Tom and Vera Strathie and David Grant. All these people were active in showing at Championship show level and they each made a valuable contribution to the philosophy of Border Union. Border Unionís main aim in the beginning was to provide a show for exhibitors, and this policy has remained at the centre of all our planning over the intervening years. Also of great importance to us are the caravanners, around 250 on site. The Saturday evening entertainment is provided mainly for them and is usually well attended.

By dint of some outstanding work done by the original committee, in particular Ronnie Irving, (a previous Kennel Club Chairman), whose organisational skills and financial acumen were put to good use in setting up a management structure, and Miss Jean Cook, the Secretary, who had to organise judges for the show in a time span that modern day secretaries would find horrendous, the first show went ahead on time! The Kennel Club were very helpful and waived the requirement for the dog show to be held in conjunction with the Agricultural Show. In the matter of judges the Kennel Club again proved very helpful, and Border Unionís first Championship Show had such names as George Leatt, Percy Whittaker, Dr Ben Raven, and Gwen Broadley judging. Mr Fred Dempster judged BIS and awarded it to Havenhandís Lakeland Terrier, Ch Cripsey Ferndale Forger, handled by Mr Frank Kellett.

The number of dogs entered has fluctuated in recent years but there are generally somewhere between 5000 and 6000 entries. On one day there are working, pastoral, utility and toy dogs, and on the other day there are gundogs, hounds and terriers.

What makes the Border Union special? The superb setting, exhibitor friendly car parking at the rear of the benching tents, disabled parking and a well laid out, compact Show with the rings surrounded by Trade Stands. There is also wet weather tents should these be required.

The use of caravans by exhibitors is encouraged and every effort is made to make their stay pleasant. Kelso has all major amenities including supermarkets, petrol stations, chemists, banks, pubs, a veterinary surgeon and a medical centre. A social evening is held in the permanent building with disco entertainment and dancing. For exhibitors coming on the two days of the Show, parking is close to the benching tents (disabled parking is also available).
