Events 2010 The Cydectin Kelso Ram SalesCome along to Springwood Park this Friday, 10th September to the Cydectin Kelso Ram Sales. Selling will commence in all rings at 10.00am prompt. Plans are well advanced for the 2010 Sales with a healthy entry of 5233 rams, up 609 on last year. This reflects the buoyancy of the sheep industry at present and , despite the severe winter and spring, reports are that rams have done well during the summer and Breeders are confident that good quality sheep will sell well. There are for sale 1874 Texel, 1311 Suffolk, 555 Bluefaced Leicister, 551 Crosses, 331 Charollais, 186 Beltex, 152 Lleyn, 113 Other Pure Breeds, 84 North Country Cheviot and 76 Border Leicester selling in a total of 15 Rings simultaneously by nine Auction Companies – Border Livestock Exchange, Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart, Glendale Livestock, Harrison & Hetherington, Hexham & Northern, Lawrie & Symington, North East Livestock Sales, John Swan Ltd and United Auctions. Once again the large double marquees will house the rams and all the Sale Rings will be under cover ready for the Secretary, Ronald Wilson, to ring the bell traditionally at precisely 10 o’clock to start the Sale. Over the past number of years the Border Union has provided a service whereby rams could, after veterinary inspection and correctly completed Licences, travel direct from the Sale to Northern Ireland. For two reasons regrettably the Border Union will not be providing this service at the 2010 Sale. Firstly last year there were only thirty eight Consignors out of a total of two hundred and forty seven who tested their rams to qualify for export direct from the Sale and secondly on Sale day there were only four export licences issued. Since the introduction of Tup Taxis this service has been subsidised by the Border Union. They continue to do their best but there are still complaints about the length of queues. To address this for the 2010 Sale the Border Union will increase the number of Taxis available and, to speed up the moving of tups, it has been agreed by the Society to introduce a £1 Buyers Commission per tup and to move all Tups free of charge for Buyers who wish to use this service. Hopefully this will improve the service provided. Last year there were 4185 rams sold for a total of £2,382,885.00p to average £569.39p. with the top Shearling making £12,000.00p and top Lamb £8,000.00p. A far cry from the first Auction in 1838 when 120 Border Leicester and Cheviots realised a total of £700 averaging just under £6.00p ! To complement the Sales there are around thirty Trade Stands including sheep identification companies, stock handling, feedstuffs, off road vehicles, fencing suppliers and the Royal Scottish Agricultural Benevolent Institute. The Border Union is indebted to Pfizer PSV who, through their Cydectin brand, are in their ninth year as Sponsors of the Kelso Ram Sales. It is very reassuring for the Border Union and the sheep industry to have a multi-national Company being so supportive.
